sc03_077_144_onslaughtI would like to give a tiny reminder to everyone here - Rock 3 still exists until November. Did something happen to make him go the way of the dodo as far as competitive play is concerned? Most expect the following answer : He just wasn't competitive enough. This time, however, we'll take a trip back to February of last year, when Rock's support was released to an overwhelming "Meh." from the general meta, with perhaps the exception of Taking the Bait and Ultimate Volcano. We'll be looking at the giant mace sharing a name with a UK band and a Marvel Comics character. Hefty difficulty, poor control, and an effect you really have to wonder if it's worth all the hassle. Perhaps after reading this article, that wonder will cease.

While we've already covered the stats, I do believe they should be re-told here, not only to keep in the theme of Soul Calibur (A tale of souls and swords eternally retold, right?), but because they just seem plain bad. 5 difficulty, 2 control, and no block at all. Plus, it's Unique. 2 CC wins games, or will enable you to win games, right? So it better be good. It better be great. It better be... awesome. Here's the effect : " E Commit : Your attack gets Multiple : 1. "

Uh... okay. Right. Sure, whatever, but is there anything else?

Nope. That's it. That's the entire card - it fits in a nutshell. It gives any one of your attacks Multiple : 1. To be fair, it means that Big Cyclone? It's Multiple : 1. Doesn't matter if you just dropped it due to your opponent's discard effect, he now has to contend with two 4 speed mid for 10 damage attacks other than one.

Still, it's Rock Only - and Rock has two Rock Only attacks that simply rock.

Yes, that was intentional.

Atomic Drop Maximum is a 7 difficulty, 2 check throw that hits for 8, and impedes blocking. Ultimate Volcano is a 7 difficulty, 3 check attack that hits for 10 and can be made unblockable. With Onslaught, both these attacks are now Multiple : 1. That's simple, right? You don't need much momentum to fire these attacks, and they respectively will do 16 and 20 damage, without even counting any outside damage buffs!

The downside? Other cards will buff these attacks better, with better checks and better difficulties, to boot. What would be especially amazing with Onslaught is Karin's Keyword Ability with Numbers support (I'm thinking of Kanzukiryu Kakutojutsu, myself), but it shares no symbols with it. None whatsoever.

Is it truly worth the 2 CC? My final judgment says no. You have better options out there, and if you're playing Rock 3 (the only viable Rock out there), you will need a lot of cards to make him work, so Onslaught will be a great big pass.
