sf08-34-celebrity-1Ah, the joys of celebrity. Being famous has all sorts of great perks and advantages that us common people simply do not have,  even if it only be the leeway that certain law enforcement units give to celebrities. This is exactly the kind of leeway that Celebrity will give you, but only if you are committed to it. Today, for the revival of this Card of the Day feature, we will be looking at this quite unorthodox card, it's symbol spread, and how useful can it really be?

First, let us break down the card's base components : It is a foundation, under Chaos, Earth and Water, with 2 difficulty for 4 control. Plus, it does not have a block. You already pay a stiff cost for playing this card in your deck. No block means that you have less blocks overall (and, if you are playing a deck that splashes Air, All or Order, that it cannot be recurred through Military Rank), and 4 CC means that your average control value could be reduced. Those stats really aren't the best in the world. Some of you may not be bothered by such stats, and if so, more power to you, for you will like it's effect. It reads : "R: When you are attempting to play an attack as a block or a Reversal, the control check gets +2. Only playable if you have no ready foundations in your staging area. Playable while committed." Whoa, said Keanu Reeves. This card is a free R that allows you to buff control checks for a particular situation, a situation that, while coming up quite rarely in the modern UFS, could easily turn the game in your favor. Plus, it helps Reversals, so for those of us who love the mechanic, we can't exactly complain. Immediately, however, we notice that it is only playable if you have no ready foundations in your staging area. Ouch. A hefty condition, but with control archetype decks being what they are, this R can actually come up more often than not, and it makes for a free foundation to pass checks on your own turn, as well.

How do you use it, however? You want your foundations to be readied on your opponent's turn in order to use their effects properly, especially if you are running a damage reduction deck, so why, and especially, how do you use it? The first question is not one that is easily answered - People use cards for reasons that are their own, but the second one, however, can be answered, perhaps germinating an idea for a deck in your head already.

First, we have to fulfill the condition, in order to do that, we need foundations with a Commit cost. I'm personally thinking of one foundation in particular that will allow you to reach that threshhold easily : Awakening. This gem from Soul Arena is absolutely perfect for this card. At the cost of committing itslef and another foundation (go for Celebrity if there's still some ready), you reduce an attack's damage and make an opponent discard a card. It has a great synergy with Celebrity and the rest of Honda's "'must be all committed" support  (Good examples would be Saba Ori and Bath House).

Another good way to use this card is by combining Sagat's support through Earth and filling your staging area  with committed foundations. It's even better if you manage to snag a Celebrity or two along the way, since each one in play will give your control checks +2, to a maximum of +8. Even with Blood Runs True hacking your block to a maximum of +6, you may still pass your block (granted, that is considering you have 4 in your staging area, committed.)

Last but not least? Genocide. A card that forces you and your opponent to leave foundations committed can only benefit you and hinder him. Since you will be blocking and reversing regardless of your ready foundations, you aren't all that bothered by it, while your opponent may curse his lack of Kung-Fu Training.

Since we have to pass judgment on this card, I am now ready to announce my final verdict, which is somewhat unclear. The card is good, don't get me wrong. If I was playing a Reversal deck off these symbols, it would immediately find itself inside said deck. However, it has limited, if not outright  no utility in any other deck, and it's condition is steep, to say the least. Still, for having played it myself, I must say that in a casual deck, this card is particularly strong, and I'm sure it'll end up being broken before the end of the year by someone who's a better deckbuilder than I am.

Plus, it's E. Honda stealing Yoshitora's gimmick, what's not to like?
