So Competitive Corner was on a much needed break for the last week and a half, for which I apologize but I had been busy doing other things and also, I knew that some stuff was in the works that might impact anything I wanted to discuss. I also honestly didn't know what I wanted to talk about! I enjoy writing in general but lately I've been in a UFS funk, which typically happens right before a new set comes out. Today I want to talk about something we all go through but never enjoy, yet it is a fundamental part of any game and one of the best learning tools for improving, if you're willing to open yourself up to the lessons it can teach.

That something is LOSING.

matt_kohlsWanted: Matt Kohls

Mr. Kohls, a seemingly pleasant young man in his early twenties, with a deceptively calm demeanor, is wanted by local authorities for his part in several violent crimes that have swept the countryside, and parts of Canada. Mr. Kohls at first kicked an unwitting gentleman's teeth in with his Glass Slippers, then repeatedly set fire to the man until he was charred to a cinder (mentioning something about "Iori's Fireball" in the process, a phrase that has expert codebreakers baffled). Mr. Kohls apparently has the ability to regenerate his weapons at will, and of late has been terrorizing parts of Michigan and, most recently, Kentucky in his current campaign of evil. His new powers demonstrate that he can destroy large tracts of foundations at once, and do so often. He is considered armed and extremely dangerous, and will Infiltrate your homes in the dead of night if you aren't careful. Stay alert!

dhalsimThe Assets of Power season is in full swing and so today I decided to take a look at what the results so far are telling us about the current state of standard UFS, if anything. A cursory look at the winners shows that Void *Dhalsim* (Michigan), Death **Nakoruru** (Florida), Fire ***Adon*** (Canada), and Evil **Ukyo** (California) have managed to achieve victory in their respective areas amongst fierce competition.

penetrating_lunge...and in with the new, naturally.

So yesterday, Erik Yaple of Sabertooth Games - *ahem*, The Baddest Man in Gaming - released the monthly State of the Game post. Aside from a previously announced occurence - the banning of Penetrating Lunge - the most significant but not really surprising piece of news announced was character rotation, and a schedule of when they will phase out. I won't re-write the whole schedule, if you wish you can find it here, but the first characters slated for rotation struck me as interesting (and I quote): "With Set 8 in February 2008, all characters with set designation of PA, SC01, SC1P, SF01, and SF1P will be removed from the environment."

hugoYou know, sometimes plans change. This week I was all set to write a nice, informative piece on some of the critical cards in the UFS world, strategies against them, and some basic metagame mainstays (discard, cc hax, etc.) that you should prepare for with regard to the Assets of Power events. Seems useful, right? Perhaps it will still come. But as the first AoP reports (click here) started to trickle in, and as I read a few comments on those threads and some others, one character in particular caught my eye, and consequently my ire. He's a subject I've long avoided discussing, but since Set 6 has been released, he's becoming more and more popular and successful and therefore I can refrain from speaking no longer. Who do I speak of, you ask?

Hugo, of course. *Cue dramatic music*...
