Continuing on with the coverage
of Worlds information, I managed to dig up a handful of decklists from the top
finishers at Worlds. They will be discussed at length, and analyzed, which
should be very helpful, considering the fact that many of decks are very
similar in more ways than simply sharing a symbol. A noteworthy exclusion is
Gravelord's Cervantes deck, as he has already written a fantastic primer on the
deck that I encourage you to check out. The article can be found here. As for
everyone else who was not included, I apologize, but I was unable to locate
your decklists, but I still have some time before school starts up again and
would be willing to write a follow-up if you'd be so kind as to part with your
lists.

2008 World Singles Champion, 2007 Team Worlds Champion, 2007 US Nationals Singles Champion, 2007 and 2008 ECC Champion as well as many other AoP/FoP titles and numerous Top 8's at various major and minor events - there isn't a whole lot that James Hata hasn't done in this game. He ends his competitive career on the highest possible note as he leaves to join FFG as UFS Lead Developer in a few weeks, so I thought I'd talk to him about his entire history in the game and his plans for the future in this comprehensive interview. I've been lucky enough to play against him in and out of competition many times and am also proud to call him a friend, so it's with some sadness that I see him leave top level UFS behind but also with a lot of hope for the direction of the game in his capable hands, and I know you all feel the same way. Here's what he had to say on the scope of his past successes and what the next chapter holds in store for him

Mad Scientist Deck Building Volume 1, Issue 1 |

Mad Scientist deck building is a concept I've learned and developed from top players. It is basically building something unorthodox, unordinary, extraordinary, etc. Building something so off the wall people look at you with raised eye-brows and raised curiosity. The first person I saw to build this way was Jihan or Goo on the ffg forums. This beast is mad crazy and inspired me and other top players such as Paul Bittner to build 80, 90, or even in my case 100 card decks!! These decks usually contain tons of damage reduction, life gain and mill/draw cards.
Now you might be asking yourself, isn't it a little more consistent, logical, not NUTS to build a 60 card deck? Why yes young jedi it is, but free your mind as Morpheus would say and let's see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Congratulations to our new UFS World Champion James Hata, who is also now the newest member of FFG staff. I have to admit, the second statement excites me a lot more than the first for many reasons. First of all, we finally have a member of staff that has a good eye for competitive cards, which should directly translate into a more balanced game. Second, it's gonna be a real pain in the ass to get his staff card off of him. The age old joke about taking candy from babies ends with Mr. Hata, which means we can expect the card to be worth its weight in gold. All joking aside, however, the last month of UFS has left us with more information than analysts, so everyone who hasn't been in on ground zero for the last couple weeks has some serious catching up to do. Hopefully I can cover most of the major points today, and follow up with the predictions for the future in the next article. That said, let's get to it.
