There are many ways to improve
your UFS performance. Some methods are quite simple and easy to follow, others
require a certain amount of introspection and objectivity. It's never really easy
to be self critical, especially when it comes to admitting your own mistakes,
or learning from your failures. By contrast, it's very easy to blame
circumstances and forces beyond your control and feel victimized. We say things
like "it was bad luck" or "I would have had you next turn" which most often
hides the fact that we overlooked something, however minute, that cost us the
game. UFS is a game of decisions, many of which occur before we ever sit down
for a game during the deck designing process, and it's very easy not to see the
mistakes you made then when you enter the scoop phase. During the game itself
you also have many choices. Should you play 3 cards this turn or 4? Would the
game have ended differently if you only played 2? If you're not asking yourself
these questions, then perhaps it's time you should.

So Competitive Corner
was on a much needed break for the last week and a half, for which I apologize
but I had been busy doing other things and also, I knew that some stuff was in
the works that might impact anything I wanted to discuss. I also honestly didn't
know what I wanted to talk about! I enjoy writing in general but lately I've
been in a UFS funk, which typically happens right before a new set comes out.
Today I want to talk about something we all go through but never enjoy, yet it
is a fundamental part of any game and one of the best learning tools for
improving, if you're willing to open yourself up to the lessons it can teach.
That something is
LOSING.

It started with a whisper. A rumor of a rumor, heard by someone's brother's cousin. The forumites caught wind and the matter quickly snowballed out of hand. Defender of the Empire was going to be banned. Fire benders everywhere went on tilt, the general sentiment being a heavy sense of loss. It seemed to hurt them the most, but it hurt others as well. |
